Description
The Grand St Bernard Pass, linking Switzerland and Italy, is a place shaped by centuries of history and an austere alpine environment. At this altitude the weather changes quickly, transforming the colours and character of the landscape.
This painting focuses on the vivid green that appears after summer rain. To capture that luminosity, I used glazing, a technique associated with the Old Masters in which thin, translucent layers of paint are built gradually over one another.
Light passes through these layers before being reflected back to the eye, allowing the painting to shift subtly according to its surroundings. In stronger daylight, the warmer underlayers become more apparent, giving the landscape a particularly vivid quality.
